Every Amazon sale is split several ways before any money reaches you. This Amazon fee calculator works out the U.S. referral fee for your category, the per-item fee, the closing fee on media and your FBA fee, then shows your payout, profit, margin and ROI. The Target price tab does the reverse: tell it the profit, margin or ROI you want and it finds the selling price.
Quick answer: Amazon’s referral fee is 15% of the sale price (item + shipping) in most categories, 8% in electronics and computers, with a $0.30 minimum. The Individual plan adds $0.99 per item; the Professional plan is $39.99 a month instead. A $25 kitchen item sold through FBA with a $4.50 fulfillment fee and a $6 product cost leaves $10.75 profit (43% margin, 179% ROI). Media adds a $1.80 closing fee.
How to use the Amazon fee calculator
- Enter your selling price and any shipping you charge the buyer (0 for free shipping or Prime).
- Pick the category. Tiered categories (clothing, beauty, jewelry, furniture and others) apply the correct rate automatically.
- Enter your product cost per unit (landed cost: purchase price plus freight).
- Choose your selling plan and fulfillment: for FBM enter your own shipping cost; for FBA enter the FBA fee for your item.
- Optional: units sold per month (to spread the $39.99 subscription) and other costs such as PPC per unit.
- Press Calculate. Your inputs are saved in this browser, so the next time you open the page they are still there.
How are Amazon seller fees calculated?
| Fee | How it is calculated | Example ($25 sale) |
|---|---|---|
| Referral fee | Category % × (item price + shipping + gift wrap), minimum $0.30 in most categories | 15% × $25 = $3.75 |
| Per-item fee | $0.99 per item, Individual plan only | $0.99 |
| Closing fee | $1.80 per item in media categories | — |
| FBA fulfillment fee | By size tier and weight, from Amazon’s rate card | $4.50 (example) |
| Subscription | $39.99 a month, Professional plan | $0.40 per unit at 100 units |
| Payout | Sales price − Amazon fees | $25 − $8.25 = $16.75 |
| Profit | Payout − product cost − your shipping − other costs | $16.75 − $6 = $10.75 |
| Margin | Profit ÷ sales price × 100 | 43% |
| ROI | Profit ÷ product cost × 100 | 179.17% |
Sales tax is not part of the sales price: Amazon collects and remits it in every state that has a sales tax, so it never enters your fee math.
Amazon referral fees by category
The full U.S. chart is below the calculator. Here is what the referral fee comes to at common prices:
| Category | $10 | $25 | $50 | $100 | $300 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clothing and Accessories | $0.50 | $4.25 | $8.50 | $17.00 | $51.00 |
| Beauty, Health and Personal Care | $0.80 | $3.75 | $7.50 | $15.00 | $45.00 |
| Consumer Electronics | $0.80 | $2.00 | $4.00 | $8.00 | $24.00 |
| Home and Kitchen | $1.50 | $3.75 | $7.50 | $15.00 | $45.00 |
| Jewelry | $2.00 | $5.00 | $10.00 | $20.00 | $52.50 |
| Furniture | $1.50 | $3.75 | $7.50 | $15.00 | $40.00 |
| Books, Music, DVD, Software and Video | $1.50 | $3.75 | $7.50 | $15.00 | $45.00 |
Two kinds of tiers work differently. In clothing, beauty, baby and grocery the rate for the price band applies to the whole price (a $19.99 shirt pays 10%, a $24.99 shirt pays 17% of the full price). In jewelry, watches, furniture, electronics accessories and compact appliances each rate applies only to the part of the price in that band (a $300 ring pays 20% of $250 plus 5% of $50 = $52.50).
How much are Amazon fees on a $10, $20 or $50 item?
Home and Kitchen (15%), seller ships the item, no FBA fee:
| Sale price | Referral fee (15%) | Professional: Amazon fees | Individual: Amazon fees | Individual fee % |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $5.00 | $0.75 | $0.75 | $1.74 | 34.8% |
| $10.00 | $1.50 | $1.50 | $2.49 | 24.9% |
| $15.00 | $2.25 | $2.25 | $3.24 | 21.6% |
| $20.00 | $3.00 | $3.00 | $3.99 | 20% |
| $25.00 | $3.75 | $3.75 | $4.74 | 19% |
| $30.00 | $4.50 | $4.50 | $5.49 | 18.3% |
| $50.00 | $7.50 | $7.50 | $8.49 | 17% |
| $100.00 | $15.00 | $15.00 | $15.99 | 16% |
The fixed $0.99 hurts most on cheap items: on a $5 sale it takes the total to almost 35%.
Amazon fee examples
Example 1: $25 kitchen gadget, FBA, Professional plan
Referral fee 15% × $25 = $3.75. With a $4.50 FBA fee, Amazon fees are $8.25 and the payout is $16.75. After the $6 product cost, profit is $10.75: a 43% margin and 179.17% ROI. The break-even price is $12.35.
Example 2: same item, Individual plan, you ship it
Referral $3.75 + $0.99 per-item fee = $4.74 in Amazon fees. Payout $20.26, minus $6 cost and $5 postage = $9.26 profit. Break-even rises to $14.11.
Example 3: a used book
A $12 book with $3.99 shipping charged, Individual plan: referral 15% × $15.99 = $2.40, closing fee $1.80, per-item $0.99, total $5.19. After $2 cost and $3.50 postage, profit is $5.30.
Example 4: the clothing price trap
At $20.00 a shirt pays 10% = $2.00; at $20.01 it pays 17% = $3.40. One cent more in price costs $1.40 more in fees. If you price near $15 or $20, check both sides of the line. For a $5 shirt with a $3.90 FBA fee, a $10 profit needs $22.77, not $20.
Example 5: target price
For the Example 1 item, the Target price tab gives $21.76 for $8 profit, $17.51 for a 25% margin and $19.41 for a 100% ROI.
Profit margin vs ROI on Amazon
Margin is profit as a share of the sale price; ROI is profit as a share of what you paid for the product. A $10.75 profit on a $25 sale with a $6 cost is a 43% margin but a 179% ROI. Many sellers screen products with a rule of thumb such as at least 30% margin or 100% ROI. To check percentages by hand, use the percentage calculator.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting shipping is in the fee base. The referral fee is charged on item price plus shipping charged.
- Using the item price only for tiers. Tier thresholds also use the total sales price.
- Leaving out the FBA fee or your own postage. Fulfillment is often the second-biggest cost after the product.
- Ignoring the minimum fee. Under $2 in a 15% category, the $0.30 minimum is more than 15%.
- Not spreading the subscription. At 20 units a month, the $39.99 plan adds $2.00 per unit.
- Skipping returns, storage and ads. Put a per-unit allowance in “Other costs”.
Selling on more than one marketplace?
Etsy’s fees work quite differently: a 6.5% transaction fee plus payment processing instead of category rates. Compare with the Etsy fee calculator. If you buy inventory on a credit card, the credit card payoff calculator shows what carrying that balance costs.
Fees are approximate and based on Amazon’s published U.S. fee schedule as of October 2026. Amazon changes fees and runs promotions; the fee preview in Seller Central is final. This is not tax or accounting advice.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Amazon take per sale?
For most categories Amazon takes a 15% referral fee on the item price plus any shipping you charge, with a $0.30 minimum. On the Individual plan you also pay $0.99 per item, and with FBA you pay a fulfillment fee per unit. A $25 kitchen item on the Professional plan pays $3.75 in referral fees; with a $4.50 FBA fee, Amazon keeps $8.25 (33% of the sale).
What is the Amazon referral fee?
The referral fee is Amazon’s commission for each item sold. It is a percentage of the total sales price (item price + shipping + gift wrap, not sales tax) that depends on the category: 8% for consumer electronics and computers, 15% for most categories such as home, toys and sports, 17% for clothing over $20 and 45% for Amazon device accessories. Most categories have a $0.30 minimum per item.
Is the Amazon Professional plan worth it?
The Professional plan costs $39.99 a month and drops the $0.99 per-item fee. It pays for itself once you sell more than about 40 units a month ($39.99 ÷ $0.99 = 40.4). It also unlocks the Buy Box, advertising and bulk listing tools, so most serious sellers use it.
How do I calculate Amazon FBA fees?
The FBA fulfillment fee depends on your item’s size tier, shipping weight and, for many items, its price. Look it up in Amazon’s FBA rate card or the Revenue Calculator in Seller Central and enter it in the FBA field here. The calculator then adds the referral fee and any per-item or closing fee to show your full cost.
What is the minimum referral fee on Amazon?
In most categories the minimum referral fee is $0.30 per item, so cheap items pay more than the percentage. A $1.50 item in Home and Kitchen would owe $0.23 at 15%, but pays $0.30. Books and other media, grocery and video games have no minimum.
Does Amazon charge fees on shipping?
Yes. The referral fee is calculated on the total sales price, which includes shipping and gift wrap charges. A $20 item with $5 shipping in a 15% category pays $3.75, the same as a $25 item with free shipping.
What is the Amazon closing fee?
A $1.80 closing fee applies to each item sold in media categories: books, music, DVDs, software, video, video games and video game consoles. It is charged on top of the referral fee.
What price do I need to make $8 profit on Amazon?
It depends on your costs. For a Home and Kitchen item that costs $6, with a $4.50 FBA fee on the Professional plan, the price is $21.76: the 15% referral fee is $3.26, Amazon pays out $14.00 and $8.00 is left after the $6 cost. Use the Target price tab for your own numbers.
